Goodbye, Harper

Heavy hearts filled our home this weekend.  After seven years of love, laughter, and challenges, we had to say goodbye to our Harpie.  When it came to kids and her family, she was the most loyal, caring, happy, and patient dog.  She brought so much joy to those who knew and loved her.  If she knew and trusted you, you had a lapdog for life.

Harper had always been the kind of dog to give us a run for our money.  From an early age, we knew she was very different from Maddux.  She was wild, loved to run anywhere, thought of small animals as toys, and was oblivious to pain of any kind.  When we moved to the country, she loved the freedom to run, but her hesitation toward strangers made it so she needed to have boundaries.  Within her boundaries, she did her job, and she did it well -- too well to the point where the mailman/UPS would just drop packages out of their windows/doors and drive off.  She had a keen intuition and knew when something wasn't quite right.  She definitely was a protector.

In the weeks leading up to this sad, sad day, Harper became more and more aggressive towards Sugar, where it was becoming easy for her to attack Sugar (something that has NEVER happened in the two years they've been together).  Out of fear for the safety of our kids and the life of Sugar, we had to make this difficult decision.  It wasn't an easy one, but it was the right one.

Thank you, Harpie, for giving us seven years of your love and devotion.

Rest in peace, Harper Rocket-Helmet Heusinkvelt.
